Ends of Beginnings of Ends

Posted in Normal with tags , , , , , , on 8 June 2008 by Red Wolf

The biggest thing to remember, regarding the title, is that there are no endings, only new beginnings. At least, that’s one philosophical view. This marks about 1 week that I’ve had this journal up, and I’ve done okay so far, I think.

I’ve cut back on my Internet usage over the past couple of days, which should help me manage to get things done around the house.  On that note, my space is moving to the spare bedroom, and that’s got to get squared away and turned into a sort of dual-purpose office/spare room.  My wife wants to get rid of some of the furninture and rearrange things, then have a yard sale in about two weeks; exercises I’m not looking forward to.  Her and her mother’s philosophy on yard sales is that if it goes out of the house, it doesn’t come back in.  Mine is that you can always put it back for another yard sale, or it could be an item I can live without, but I do use occasionally or could find a use for eventually.

On the plus side, it does mean I have to go through my stuff.  Maybe I’ll even get it all organized.  Maybe.  It isn’t very likely.  Perhaps I’ll be able to find all of my laundry, match all my socks, etc…  Again, not very likely.

While WikiPedia can be tricky sometimes, there are always good things there…  this, for instance. It will probably hurt your brain, but it is helpful to me, at times.

On another note, I am never going to the pool around mid-day without tons of sunblock, and airy, loose, long clothing.  That should keep me from being sunburned, unlike right now…

For those I haven’t told, I’m planning on planting a garden next year.  Why am I planning now?  Because I need to build the beds, get the dirt, start the compost, plan out the beds, enrich the beds, decide if it’s all really worth it, get the seed starter pots set up, get the seeds, start some of the seeds, and on and on and on, and that all takes a few months.  I am going to try to borrow a rototiller from someone to break up and make it easier to level the ground under where I want to put things.  I’ll probably try to enrich that, too, and then build up 6″ or so 4′x4′ beds.  It seems a lot, but I would like to try to do 6 beds, use companion planting, and crop rotation.  The single most important plan:  crop rotation every year.  I also plan on composting as much food and other waste as I can.

Rambling with that:  Composting is something important that most people who live in a house can do!  There are a lot of web sites out there that can tell you how to get started.  I’ll simply say that it will cut down on the amount of waste you send off to the landfill every week, and you’ll be creating something that you can spread on your lawn, use in your flower beds, and mix in with potting soil that will make your plants happy.

And, back to plants and gardening, I plan on doing a variety of plants, including cucumbers, tomatoes, salad greens, peppers, corn, beans, garlic, onions, carrots, and…  watermelon!  I’ve got some information to go through on how much space each plant needs to decide exactly what I want to do.  I may even do some squash and do a Native American bed (corn, beans, and squash).  I do plan on getting some Cherokee Purple tomato seeds, as those are (supposedly) what Cherokee grew originally, so they should technically be native species to this area.

Frustrations on a Difficult Subject

Posted in Uncategorized on 3 June 2008 by Red Wolf

Difficult subject?  Only Calculus.  My “classes” started yesterday afternoon, and, of course, I didn’t get the information I needed until this morning.  (Late, because, let’s face it, I like to sleep in.)  I drove all the way to Pellissippi to try to get the required text only to be told a) they’re sold out and it won’t be in until Friday, Thursday at the earliest, b) it’s $210, and c) because they’re designed by two totally different departments, the PSTCC text is completely different from the RODP On-Line text, so they only stock it when they need to.  The kicker:  I have homework due Thursday.  So, what can I do?

I ordered it at Amazon and I’m hoping it gets here tomorrow, like their website said it would if I overnighted it, which I did (almost $18 for overnight, which is actually excellent).  I almost got the solutions manual, which would actually be a lot of help for seeing steps and such, but I didn’t.  I may get it soon, though, if I can get a job…

On a sort of up side, my leatherbound OSB should be shipping tomorrow from Amazon and arriving some time next week.  Can’t wait to have one I can underline, highlight, and notate in.  (I got a hardcover for Becky that I’ve been reading out of.)

I’m working on an idea for a new story involving naval stuff, of which I know little to nothing except what I’ve seen in war film.  It may actually be a space thing.  I don’t know.  We’ll see what I come up with.

That’s what I’ve got for now.  Most I can do is pray for peace and get to reading what I’ve got from the course site.

Peace,

Red Wolf

Let the Journaling Begin

Posted in Normal with tags , , , on 2 June 2008 by Red Wolf

I am terrible at this.  Journaling, that is.  I have tried it before in several different places, but I always fail to keep it up.  I suppose I often don’t feel the need to write things down, I lose inspiration, things I think of are not to be shared, or any host of other reasons.  My goal is now to try to write a journal entry a day.  There will be random stuff interspersed with normal, sort of preformatted posts.  The formatting for those posts will change, too.  Here’s what I’m hoping to have…

This is just a beginning. I plan on adding more to that table as time goes on. I have SCA stuff, real world stuff, DiscworldMUD stuff, and so on.  We’ll see how things go.

Things I am NOT going to do (negative goals):
Have expectations of hits.  Have expectations of constant readership.  Have an expectation of posting more than once or twice a week. Bash, insult, deride, or defame in any way anyone else, any other religion, any other entity, or any other noun that comes up.

Things I will TRY to do (positive goals):
Post at least once a week, preferably on Mondays.  Present a website or article of note and interest that is either postitive or relevant to my interests in each “normal” post.  Post a non-normal post at least once a month (poetry, art, prose, etc.).  Journal something religiously motivated at least once a month.  Type at least 300 words per post.

There, I think those are good goals.  I hope, if you’re reading this, you gain some insight, either about me or about yourself.  I am no philosopher.  I am simply trying to find a safe outlet for the things that come into my mind.

Peace,

Red Wolf
